SBE member Fernando Moreno-Herrero gets an ERC “Proof of Concept” Grant
Fernando Moreno-Herero (National Center of Biotechnology, CNB, CSIC, Madrid), SBE member and awardee of 2014 edition of “Enrique Pérez-Payá” Prize, wins a 2014 ERC “Proof of Concept” Grant
ERC ‘Proof of Concept’ grants are conceived to bridge the gap between Research and marketable innovation, by pushing ideas with potential practical application which have developed through the implementation of projects funded by one of the major ERC schemes.
In the latest ERC Proof of Concept competition (2014 call), a total of 120 researchers are being funded, out of 442 applications. Among the successful projects, 14 are from Scientists working in Spain.
Fernando has been recipient of an ERC Starting Grant from the 2007 call, and the project now awarded, named ServoTec, is based on one of his latest results from that Grant. In collaboration with Prof. Julio Gómez Herrero (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid), they developed a new Servo Digital PID Controller which largely increases the speed and capacity for data acquisition and can be easily integrated with low-cost equipment.
ServoTec technology provides an ultra-rapid, precise and reliable response from signals measured by a variety of sensors. It has a main application as an acquisition card for AFM equipment, but can as well be used for any system which requires ultra-rapid response after an input sensor signal. Other potential applications are automatic systems used for navigation in cars, trains or air plains, land exploring devices and domestic, industrial or security robots.
