Renew or die: The molecular mechanisms of peptidoglycan recycling and antibiotic resistance in Gram-negative pathogens. Drug Resist Updat. 2016 Sep;28:91-104. doi: 10.1016/j.drup.2016.07.002.
Antimicrobial resistance is one of the most serious health threats. In Gram negative bacteria the cell-wall recycling process involve a large number of enzymes that are tightly regulated to warrant bacterial survival and is directly linked to antibiotic resistance. Black arrows indicate cell wall recycling pathways. In the presence of b-lactam antibiotics (red arrows) an antibiotic resistance pathway is activated to produce b-lactamase.
